Painted and at the Show! (June 3rd)

Painted and at the Show!

Well, we did it - it's amazing that we actually finished the car enough to pass inspection but it happened. I keep looking at the car and doing a double take! Like the forgetful fish in Finding Nemo - Wow! Look, my car is painted!

We were in our first parade and show... Saturday of the show Ken brought his 75 bright green Civic and parked next to me so we had quite a display, in addition to the T500 that Brian brought to be part of an old/new Honda truck display. (More photos on ThisOldHonda.org SOON!)

One of my fellow show committee members gave me the "wetest paint" award :-) Thank you to J&J Auto of Bridport, VT for the stellar (and fast) paint job! George and I greatly appreciate your late nights for us!

Partially Reassembled (June 1st)

Partially Reassembled

This photo was taken sometime after midnight -- on Wednesday June 1 we pulled an all nighter to get the car reassembled - yes it was crazy. I was still working on assembling things 1/2 an hour before my inspection appointment on June 2 at 1pm.

The good news is that we passed inspection and the car seems to run as well as it did before -- now it looks pretty too! It was really hard to have to cut holes in the new carpet (to install seats and belts) but at about 4AM you really stop caring so much about that kind of thing.

Painted! (May 31st)

Painted!

This is only the first coat and I was only allowed in to the shop to drop off supplies... I got kicked out immediately after this photo. Probably for my own good not to inhale all those paint fumes but...

I'm heading over to the shop at lunch time to see the completed job and make proper offerings to the painter :-) The inspection appointment has been set for Thursday afternoon so we have 2 days to get everything back into the car and working - going to be a couple more LONG days.

Passenger Quarter After (May 23rd)

Passenger Quarter After

I guess this isn't really after - more like in the middle. I'll snap another photo of the real after - after paint that is. The driver's side is actually worse and in the process of having the same steps done.

The rust holes go right into the trunk and there are a number of patch panels and seam sealer in the outer metal pocket areas of the trunk area (that will all be hidden with plastic inserts when done).

We're still working on a deadline - June 2nd or 3rd is my last day to get the car inspected so it will all have to be painted and back together by then... it will be close if not entirely ready.

The new windshield goes in today (5/24) which works out well because we have a show planning meeting tonight and will not be able to work on the car! I've got the rear bumper apart and 1/2 sanded. The impact strip came off pretty well and it's sitting outside with stripper on it right now. That will be a project for Wed night while Joe applies more fiberglass to the holes...

Passenger Quarter Before (May 22nd)

Passenger Quarter Before

Here's a neat photo - and check the repair after this one for the "after"... the back side of the quarter panel was pretty much gone so it got cut out. Joe then cut and shaped a piece of metal to fit the general opening. Note the many cuts to make it rounded - just like with wood working to make wood curve like a bannister.

The next photo shows the same area smoothed over and mostly filled. A couple more coats of fiberglass will go on to smooth it out and hold it all together and once painted you'll never know it wasn't perfect... well OK so you'll know because you read the site but not many other people will :-)
